AI Search Trends Impact Google, Apple Signals Shift as Alphabet Stock Drops

A recent development in the tech world has sent ripples through the market, with Alphabet, Google's parent company, seeing its stock decline following comments from Apple about the growing influence of artificial intelligence in search behavior. Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, revealed during a federal court testimony that search traffic on Apple's Safari browser dropped in April for the first time in over two decades. He attributed this decline to users increasingly turning to AI-powered alternatives like ChatGPT and Perplexity, signaling a potential shift away from traditional search engines like Google.
This news comes amid Alphabet's ongoing antitrust trial, where the U.S. government is scrutinizing Google's dominance in online search. Cue's testimony highlighted Apple's exploration of integrating AI-driven search options, such as those from Perplexity and Anthropic, into Safari. This could disrupt Google's long-standing position as the default search engine on Apple devices, a deal that reportedly nets Apple $20 billion annually. The suggestion that AI might replace conventional search engines has rattled investors, leading to a more than 8% plunge in Alphabet’s stock, wiping out over $170 billion in market value in a single day.
Google countered these claims, asserting that it continues to see growth in overall search queries, including those from Apple devices, driven by features like voice and visual search. However, the market's reaction underscores broader concerns about AI's potential to reshape the search landscape, threatening Google's advertising revenue, which relies heavily on its 90% share of global search traffic. Meanwhile, Apple’s stock also dipped by 1.1%, reflecting its own financial stake in the Google search deal.
The testimony also plays into the broader narrative of the antitrust case, which could force Google to divest assets like its Chrome browser or end default search agreements. While Google argues that AI innovation is naturally eroding its dominance, the immediate investor response suggests significant unease about its ability to maintain its search-driven revenue model in an AI-driven future.

Amazon Unveils AI Tool to Streamline and Boost Product Listings

Amazon has introduced a new generative AI-powered tool, "Enhance My Listing," aimed at simplifying the process for sellers to optimize their product listings. This tool leverages Amazon’s Bedrock service to analyze customer engagement data and automatically generate suggestions for product titles, descriptions, attributes, and missing details tailored to seasonal trends.
Sellers can review, modify, or accept these AI-generated recommendations before updating their listings in Amazon’s catalog, saving time on what can be a labor-intensive task, especially for merchants managing hundreds of products. The tool is initially rolling out to select U.S. sellers starting May 8, 2025, with plans for a broader release in the coming weeks. Amazon has been integrating generative AI into its seller tools since 2023, starting with features to assist with product description writing, and this latest innovation builds on that foundation to enhance listing quality and efficiency.
